Finding Audio for my Game

One of the last things I have to do for my game is to find background music and sound effects. I try to find websites that have free audio so I won’t have to deal with copyright issues.

Here’s are some of the websites according to Google Gemini that are free resources:

  • Freesound.org: A huge collaborative database with Creative Commons licensed sounds, great for diverse effects and music, but licenses vary.
  • OpenGameArt.org: Focuses on game development, offering art and audio with easy-to-understand licenses.
  • Zapsplat: Large library of royalty-free sound effects and music, offering both free and paid options.
  • Incompetech: Excellent for royalty-free background music, especially for indie games.
  • Kenny: Provides themed game asset packs (including sound) under CC0, perfect for unrestricted use.
  • Mixkit: Offers free, high-quality sound effects, including specific game-related sounds.
  • SoundJay: Good for simple sound effects like buttons and explosions.
  • NoiseForFun: Arranges sounds by game genre, ideal for quick searches.
  • FreeSFX: A straightforward site with many free sound effects, though checking licenses is key.

I am inspired by the indie game hollow knight and I wanted to have a similar feel in the audio. I was looking for piano musics for the background sound of my game.

There are a lot of options to choose from but it was hard to find something I liked. I don’t have a lot of free time to make my own soundtracks but I chose what I could get for free.
