UN Sustainability Goal

” Goal 12 is about ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns, which is key to sustain the livelihoods of current and future generations. “
The sustainable theme for my web design is Goal 12 Responsible Consumption and Production.

I’m interested in this theme because it affects our planet significantly. Humans create so much waste, millions of tons of food go to waste while people are starving around the world. Garbage like plastic is going into our oceans affecting ocean life. Our consumption levels are unnecessary high making us create more waste and go through our natural resources quickly.
We should be able to take a small step to reduce the waste in our everyday lives by doing simple task like recycling, not waste food and buying only what we need, using reusable products like bags and just being thoughtful about what you buy and choosing a sustainable option whenever possible.

Plastic Waste
While there’s many important topics about Responsible Consumption and Production, my website is focused on plastic waste and the importance on recycling and using reusable products to reduce the amount of plastic used.
Plastic is one of the cheap and most-used materials we use in our daily lives.

When plastic waste is mismanaged – not recycled, incinerated, or kept in sealed landfills – it becomes an environmental pollutant. One to two million tons of plastic enter our oceans yearly, affecting wildlife and ecosystems.
The production of plastic also contributes to climate change, it relies on fossil fuels, and the entire lifecycle of plastic, from extraction to disposal, which is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions.

There’s many ways we can contribute for us to reduce plastic. Simple things like using a reusable bag when going shopping instead of plastic bags, using reusable water bottle, or even just simply recycling the plastic correctly.

Beyond Plastic
Browsing through different different organizations for plastic waste, I discovered Beyond Plastics. Their mission is to end plastic pollution everywhere.
This is their website homepage layout:

It’s a long scroll so I only included some of the imagery.
Beyond Plastics seeks to educate the media, policymakers, and the public on the plastic pollution crisis; encourage businesses to eliminate single-use plastics; train students to become leaders in the anti-plastics movement; and help block new plastic manufacturing and plastic burning facilities.
Their web design isn’t bad but I feel like their home page can look modernize and eye-catching. I feel like when you first open a website you should be able to know the purpose of the website. The first thing that shows up on their site is their advertisement for their new book and facts about plastic-free tips for Halloween. I think they should advertise their purpose of the organization so users are aware who they are and what they can learn more from them.
AI ITERATIONS
Using AI to see how it can take my website mockup and make it better. I’m hoping to see if AI could give me ideas to refine my mockup design. AI has become part of our society and being able to incorporate it to help improve and learn from task instead of treating it as human replacement can help us achieve more.
The program I used is Google Gemini. I inserted the image of my mockup and asked Gemini these prompts:
Prompt 1:
Take this image of this Website Homepage layout and redesign it to make it visually appealing and easy to navigate so the users can find the information they need.

Prompt 2. Make it more unique and creative while keeping the color scheme.

Prompt 3. Make the design more professional and simplistic.

Interview for feedback on MockUp Page
I interviewed 2 people that are close to me to see their opinions on my site and what I can approve upon it. More on my web design is found on my User Experience page.
Interview #1:
I showed my design to my friend and he liked how simplistic my redesign looked. He told me it looks like a basic website but it looks more organize compared to the original website.
Interview #2:
I showed my design to my sister and she liked the color scheme I chose and how I changed the logo to match the color pallet of my web design. She liked how it was easy to navigate compared to the original website.
The Webby Awards
Looking through the Webby Awards, I found a lot of fascinating web designs.

Site facilitating political change, social movement, human rights, public education and reform, or revolution.

I love how clean and simple the web page is. I like the choose of images and fonts they used to create the simple graphics. Everything just goes well together.
I would love to create this simplicity in my web pages.

USER TESTING
November 3, 2025
My web design class got the opportunity to experience user testing for our community college library website. They were trying to make the site more helpful for students and finding information easily.
Link to the site: https://library.sunywcc.edu/homepage
I enjoyed the experience, they instructors were friendly and explained the process very well. I never used the library website prior to this experience so I didn’t get to compare before and after. But they were happy to hear I was a new user so they could see how I try to navigate through the site.
